Mastercard announces stablecoin risk screening with a 2027 global rollout
Borderless.xyz and Keyrails are the first partners for an API that checks payment context alongside blockchain activity.

Mastercard announced a stablecoin payment screening service on October 19, naming Borderless.xyz and Keyrails as its first partners. The company says Stablecoin Security will launch first in North America, with worldwide commercial availability expected in 2027.
The service combines payment information with blockchain analysis. Through an API, it assesses signals such as the origin of funds, exposure to restricted parties and potential scams, and supplies a risk score before a payment is completed. Mastercard says institutions can connect it to their existing fraud, compliance and case-management systems.
Checking the whole payment
The distinction between a transfer and a transaction matters here. A Bank for International Settlements working paper examined more than 593 million stablecoin transfer events within 141 million Ethereum transactions in 2025. It found that roughly a third of transactions involved complex operations. Because those operations generated multiple transfers, they accounted for nearly 60% of transfer events.

Counting each event as a separate payment can therefore misrepresent what users are doing. The study offers context for examining a payment across several steps; it does not test Mastercard's product.
In a separate company interview, security executive Ann Johnson described applying Mastercard's existing fraud information to newer payment methods. She identified cross-border payments as a current stablecoin use case and said customers were asking the company to extend its security role to those flows.
Initial partners and the next stage
Mastercard identifies Keyrails with high-value cross-border trade payments and Borderless.xyz with connecting financial institutions to stablecoin providers. The company also plans to expand the service through BVNK in 2027.
Those are announced product and rollout plans. The release provides no independent results establishing how accurately the new service detects fraud or how often it flags legitimate payments.
